The Western Front

In July 1916 the ill-prepared 61st Division and 5th Australian Division had arrived in France only days before they were ordered to attack the strongly fortified German front line positions near the Aubers Ridge. The attack served as a diversion to relieve pressure on the Somme Front.

The feint was a disastrous failure and was responsible for one of the greatest losses of Australian lives in 24 hours, although surpassed by the Battle of Bullecourt in 1917.

We visit several Military Cemeteries, the museum and the moving "Cobber" Memorial in the Fromelles area, all are testomony to this battle.
