WW 1

The Western Front

The 1st World War is the red line in most of our cycle tours. We follow the old Western Front in Flanders and France. By Christmas 1914 a static lane of trenches stretched some 450 miles from the North Sea to the Swiss border.

The battles that we sadly recall took place in Flanders, on the hills of Arras or the rolling fields of the Somme. The French and American armies saw action int the Aisne, Marne and Meuse-Argonne.

The landscape still reflects the tragedy of the war. However, within that destruction, hundreds of war cemeteries have emerged and offer a tranquil and rare beauty when contrasted to the horrors of total destruction.
